PARQUET AS THE PERFECT LINK
Karlien Stoeykens and Tom Vanderstukken bought their home - a charming middle-class house dating from 1934, located on ´Den Avenue´ in Wespelaar - in 2007. They began modernising it in the spring of 2013. The hallway and the modern kitchen are now laid with black ceramic tile having a slate motif. Their Variano Parquet - Royal Grey Oak Coloured - in the other rooms of the ground floor forms a perfect link between two styles and two colours, and thus unites the interior into a beautiful and harmonious whole.
Tom is product manager in a company for bakery ingredients, Karlien communicates about urban renovation projects. Their children Nand and Floor are 7 and 5 years old, respectively. Six years after they purchased the house, they began renovating the four rooms on the ground floor: the hall, the kitchen with dinner table, the TV room and the playroom. A number of inner walls disappeared, a coolly stylish kitchen now occupies the centre of the house, and the heating, electricity and sanitary fittings were all redone. The distinctive house thus received the necessary comfort and was transformed into a cosy, spacious and light-filled family residence where the family clearly feels ´at home´.
Good equilibrium
What’s immediately striking are the contrasts: the long white cabinet wall has black recesses, on the floor there are wood and ceramic tiles, modern furniture in the kitchen is combined with a second-hand cabinet in the playroom, sober and tight lines alternate with original elements such as the old doors with glass windows … Yet nowhere do they clash.
The different rooms flow into one another, and the grey-coloured Variano Parquet forms a beautiful link between classic and modern. "This old house has its own style and charm, and we definitely wanted to preserve that", says Tom. "But at the same time, we wanted a very modern kitchen. Variano creates a nice balance. It has the charm of weathered parquet, but the combination of smaller slats gives it a surprising look. Also very important: if a scratch occurs, it´s not such a big deal, since in any case the floor has its own pits and scratches.“
